Paul Schofield captured the moment a maned wolf appeared from behind trees into a winter evening’s light at the park’s Atlantic Forest and it won him the Mammal Category of BIAZA’s annual photography competition.

His atmospheric entry, titled The Twilight Strand, shows one of the park’s family of maned wolves with its distinctive red fur and powerful gaze as it searches for food.

It was one of more than 400 entries across six categories featuring animals from BIAZA’s 133 member zoos and aquariums in Britain and Ireland and it will be featured in the charity’s 2025 calendar.

“Thank you to Paul Schofield who captured the captivating photo of one of our maned wolves. We feel so special that one of our beautiful animals has been featured in this competition,” said John Minion, CEO of the park at Auckley, near Doncaster.

The 175-acre park, which is home to more than 400 animals from rare and endangered species, is a centre for conservation and a member of BIAZA, which held the competition to highlight the work of zoos and aquariums.

“These photos showcase the beauty of nature, a beauty that is sadly threatened,” said Dr Jo Judge, CEO of BIAZA. “These images are testament to the vital work of our member zoos and aquariums in caring for and restoring the natural world,”

Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which puts conservation at the heart of all its activities, offers visitors a mesmerising walk through experience coming almost face to face with some of the world’s most beautiful and rare species including Amur Leopards and Tigers, Polar Bears, Giraffes, Sea lions and many more.
