Cheetah
Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is derived from the Hindi word Chita, meaning “spotted one”. Acinonyx means “no move claw” in Greek — a reference to its semi-retractable claws. The word Jubatus means “crested” in Latin.

Fast Facts
Hunting
Cheetahs prefer to hunt during the day. They are known to eat quickly, abandoning their kills once other predators are spotted.
Around 10% of cheetah kills end up being stolen, mostly by lions and spotted hyenas.
Ice to see you, to see you... ice
Cheetahs have been around for thousands of years. The last ice-age caused an extreme decline in their genetic diversity, known as a bottleneck.
